British brewed. Indian spirit.
Sura Beer
The idea was simple. Bring a British-Indian branded IPA to the market. Why? Mainly so we could enjoy an IPA with a curry. How hard could it be?

With 100s of variations in barleys, hops, yeast, and countless other variables - the answer soon became clear. Hard. Very hard.

Rather than hitting and hoping, we went to the drawing board - outlining the perfect beer to complement the spices and complexity of Indian food. Balanced character to enhance, and not clash with the deliciously intricate flavours. Hints of citrus to cut through the heat. Finished with the crisp bitterness of an IPA.

Over 10 iterations, and many failures later, we finally got there.

Brewed with a specially selected blend of 4 malted barleys, 2 varieties of hops, and Indian coriander seeds - Surā IPA brings together the best of British, American, and Indian ingredients to deliver a refreshing IPA, with subtle citrus and pine tones.

At 4.3% ABV this beer is made for the beer loving public.

The history of Surā

5th Buddhist precept:

“I agree to exercise the rule of abstinence from fermented beverages (Surā), one source of the recklessness”

Sura is our nod to the spiritual ancestor of beer today. Long before Burton-Upon-Trent, beer (as we now know it) was a staple of ancient Indian life. Alcoholic beverages came in two forms, Soma and Sura. Soma, a psychoactive concoction, was the reserve of holy men and elites, often used in rituals.

Sura is described in ancient texts as being made from either barley, wheat or rice and fermented using yeast; the same ingredients used in beers today. A recreational drink that was consumed by warriors and peasants alike.

Heritage
The Cornershop Brewing Co.

For a long time the corner shop has been the butt of the joke, something to be mocked and ridiculed. But we think it’s time to re-write that narrative.

The corner shop is the story of the immigrant. It is the story of those who left everything they knew behind, but never relied on a hand out. It is the story of being spat at on the street, but never giving in. It is the story of risking everything in search of a better future.

Far from being something to ridicule, we think that’s something to celebrate. Not just for the British Asian community, but for anyone, regardless of race or religion, who shares the values of risk-taking, sacrifice and hard work.
